Is an IOP Center Able to Customize a Plan to Your Needs?

Are you suffering from an addiction issue? If so, you are not alone. It’s no secret that the US is currently mired in an opioid abuse epidemic. The number of Americans who are abusing substances like heroin, fentanyl and prescription painkillers is off the charts.

This epidemic has put a horrible strain on the addiction treatment community. With so many residential treatment programs being impacted, therapists are making an effort to place more clients in outpatient treatment programs. Outpatient programs were created to allow patients to get the therapy they need without being restricted to a residential treatment facility. As a point of reference, here’s a list of the three primary outpatient options being used across the country:

  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP): five to seven days a week, six to eight hours a day in treatment
  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP): three to five days a week, four to six hours a day in treatment
  • Standard Outpatient (OP): one to two days a week, one to two hours a day in treatment

Note: Each option is differentiated by the amount of time the client has to spend in therapy. Treatment includes individual, group and therapy options. These programs are available for clients who cannot, won’t or don’t need to submit to residential treatment.

Is an IOP Center Able to Customize a Plan to Your Needs?

It wasn’t that long ago that the addiction treatment community had limitations on the treatment options they could offer to clients. What many therapists began to realize was a cookie cutter approach to drug and alcohol addiction treatment wasn’t getting the job done. That reality was consistently supported the fact that 70% of all clients leaving rehab were coming back in due to relapse issues. This went on for decades. A thirty percent success rate was, isn’t and never will be acceptable.

To combat the issue, addiction treatment specialists started looking at clients as unique individuals with unique circumstances. Based on the differences, the addiction treatment community began customizing treatment programs for a great majority of all clients who would enter rehab. That practice continues today. The really good news is the relapse rates are starting to decline across the country.

To answer the titled question, yes, most IOP treatment centers should be able to customize a treatment program that addresses your specific circumstances. They will do so to ensure your have the best chance for success. Here’s a look at some of the things they might address with a custom IOP treatment program:

  • Time issues related to work or school
  • Financial issues
  • Primary responsibility for the care of family members

Let’s discuss further.

Time Issues Related to Work or School

Your health and personal welfare should always be your primary concerns. With that said, your responsibilities at work or school are also important. If your career, job or schooling would be negatively impacted by you submitting to a residential treatment program, IOP treatment might be your best option. As such, your therapist should have enough flexibility to schedule your therapy appointments around your work or school schedule. If you go to work/school during the day, you can expect your schedule to include night and weekend therapy sessions.

Financial Issues

If you don’t have healthcare insurance or adequate financial resources to pay for treatment, your IOP therapist has options that might be more affordable. They might decide to stick with traditional treatment options in lieu of using more expensive evidence based or holistic treatment options. They might also choose to give you fewer appointments a week and allow you to pay as you go. That would result in your treatment extending over several months.

Primary Responsibility for the Care of Family Members

Perhaps, you are a stay at home caretakers or have a responsibility to be at home when your kids return home from scare. Again, your therapist has enough flexibility to create a therapy schedule that allows you to come in for therapy as your home responsibilities allow.

It’s understandable that you may have personal circumstances that might limit your opportunity to get treatment. First and foremost, you have to deal with your addiction or suffer possible consequences. For our part, we would be happy to work with you to design a treatment program to which you can abide.
