If I Definitely Can’t Afford Inpatient Rehab, What’s the Best Outpatient Program?

Not everyone can indeed afford inpatient addiction treatment. With costs typically ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 a month, that’s a tall financial hill for someone to climb while in the throes of a drug or alcohol addiction.

The last thing anyone wants to see is someone with an addiction feeling like barriers are standing in the way of them getting the help they need. Yes, money can be a barrier. However, there is a lot of workers in the addiction treatment community that will do everything in their power to find solutions.

Before you go with the belief you cannot afford inpatient rehab, you need to be aware that healthcare insurance companies are required by law to cover addiction treatment costs. They must offer coverage in the same way they would cover any other kind of medical treatment. Additionally, insurance companies can no longer discriminate based on a customer having a preexisting condition. Do you have healthcare insurances? If yes, you might be able to afford inpatient treatment if your copay or deductible is low enough.

If you don’t have healthcare insurance coverage, do not fret. There are more affordable treatment alternatives available.

Affordable Outpatient Alternatives

If you can’t or won’t submit to an inpatient addiction treatment program, there is an excellent chance you can get the treatment you need as an outpatient client. Since the cost of most outpatient programs is significantly less than the average inpatient program, you should be able to find an outpatient treatment option that falls within your financial constraints.

With that said, you will need to work with your rehab facility of choice to decide on which outpatient treatment option will best meet your needs.

Currently, the addiction treatment community as a whole has three different outpatient options from which to choose. The job of a rehab facility’s administrative staff is to match each client with the right option based on the client’s financial and time availability restrictions. The depth of the client’s addiction also warrants consideration.

The three predominant outpatient treatment options include:

  • Partial hospitalization
  • Intensive outpatient
  • Standard outpatient

Below, we are going to describe the primary characteristics of each outpatient option. This will give you a better idea of what you can expect at each level. In all three cases, clients will live and sleep at home but report for treatment when scheduled to do so.

Partial Hospitalization

Partial hospitalization is by far the most restrictive outpatient option. Clients can expect to spend five to seven days a week, six to eight hours a day for two to three months in treatment. Rehabs use this option for clients with moderate to severe addiction issues.

During their time in the facility, clients will need to take part in both individual and group therapy sessions. Individual therapy allows clients to learn about the sources of their addiction issues. With this kind of knowledge, they can start working on their issues by developing coping strategies that target those specific issues.

As for group therapy, this is a treatment method that allows clients to interact among themselves. Therapists use this methodology to help clients learn from each other. There’s also hope clients will bond together to form important support resources for the future.

Intensive Outpatient

While intensive outpatient treatment is less restrictive, it still requires a lot of time and effort from the client. Clients can expect to spend three to five days a week, four to six hours a day for two to three months in treatment. Rehabs use this option for clients with moderate addiction issues but need oversight.

With this option, clients will spend the majority of their time working with their therapists as individuals. The level of counseling is very intense, hence the title intensive outpatient care.

Standard Outpatient

Standard outpatient programs are available to clients with moderate addiction issues but reasonable control over their lives. They can expect to spend one or two days a week, one to two hours a day for two to three months in treatment. Therapists like to use this option for clients who have already been through higher levels of treatment but just need a little extra maintenance counseling.
